Big data and AI to improve the management of imaging equipment and patient satisfaction

The use of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) is growing in healthcare. Valued at USD 10.4 billion in 2021, the global AI in healthcare market size is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38.4% from 2022 to 20311. Today, their usage is more well known for helping in the early diagnosis of a patient. However, AI can also be used to improve operational aspects of imaging services.

An AI solution for management of imaging services

Currently, the GE Healthcare service team receive valuable operational data from more than 80,0002 connected imaging systems from across the globe. Thanks to the analysis and processing of this data, we can create AI solutions, such as OnWatch Predict, to help us and our customers to move from the equipment break & fix model to a predictive and proactive service model.

OnWatch Predict leverages digital twin and machine data to create a unique virtual MR model, based on AI learning. Information is collected daily, and then compared to the virtual model to predict the estimated remaining life of the component monitored. Models and alerts cover different assets of the system such as environment, image quality, MR magnet and cryogens, patient handling, and main system.

An unforeseen failure in a MR system generates an average of 4.5 days3 equipment downtime. This directly impacts the patient, delaying appointments and their subsequent diagnosis, and the staff as they reschedule activities. It will also have a financial effect on the hospital.

Thanks to OnWatch Predict algorithms, we can identify potential failures and provide advanced part delivery and service scheduling to help reduce the overall limited use or unplanned downtime and provide improved planning of the corrective actions.

This is just the beginning for predictive services. Jean Michel Gard, GE Healthcare’s Global Product Manager for Predictive Services, explains:

" We are at the dawn of a new era enabled by the power of applied intelligence to predict with precision when a system needs preventive maintenance. This is reinventing operational efficiency for healthcare organizations, reducing disruptions, and enhancing care."

This new predictive solution OnWatch Predict provides peace of mind by remotely monitoring and predicting impending failures of critical components in your MR system, helping to convert unplanned downtime into a planned service event.
